High School Student Teaching
Chair Design
My second student teaching placement was at an arts high school, three days a week. My Cooperating Teacher was teaching an introduction to graphic design class with 10th graders, an advanced painting class with 11th and 12th graders along with AP Art History for 12th graders. I mainly co-taught the graphic design class. I coplanned lessons with my cooperating teacher, prepared materials, gave students feedback and graded student work.

I concluded my student teaching hours by teaching my own learning segment in the graphic design class. There were three parts to the project. Students chose an object and drew it from observation in graphite to study it and better understand the qualities of the object. After that they brainstormed various forms and functions for the object under the lens of: commercial, responsible, experimental or discursive design. Then they illustrated the new design in color in a medium of their choosing. The final step was to create an advertisement, package design or instruction manual. Students were to combine text and image intentionally to tell a story.

I created worksheets that guided the students through the design process. I sequenced and scaffolded the project so that the students would carefully consider each possibility of design and create really dynamic advertisements.
